At St. Charles Borromeo in Portland, we share Pope Francis’s conviction that “there is no justification whatsoever for a lack of housing.” Inspired by these words, we are working together to address our community’s affordable housing crisis. After learning that the owner of a local mobile home park was planning to sell the park, which would displace many residents, we invited these residents into our parish to listen and discern together. Partnering with others, the residents and our parishioners testified inside city hall and rallied outside city hall in support of affordable housing for all. With one voice, we called on the city of Portland to help residents buy the mobile home park, which they called home. Thankfully, our call was heeded! The mobile home park was purchased by a coalition of non-profit organizations, with help from a loan through the Portland Housing Bureau. The mobile homes stand today as a testament to our parish’s effort to live out our faith through works of mercy and justice.
