Learning Activities on Poverty

Use these activities with a variety of audiences to explore poverty in the U.S. and globally. The activities help participants understand poverty and its many faces, and also consider the causes and solutions to poverty.

Creating on the Margins Contest

Parishes and schools can use this contest, including a facilitator’s guide and learning resources, to help youth in grades 7-12 to learn about poverty in the U.S., its causes, and the response of the Church. After learning, youth become educators of others through their artwork.

This educational activity uses three volunteers and a series of guided exchanges of playing cards to illustrate how a person's background, experiences, and choices can impact his or her opportunities and economic status.

Ending Poverty in Community (EPIC)Toolkit

This toolkit includes six lessons to help young people learn about the causes of poverty in the United States. Youth learn about issues facing communities, reflect on Catholic social teaching, analyze issues in light of the U.S. bishops statement, A Place at the Table, and create a plan for action.
